Bladesmith and artist Nick Rossi’s unique style that seamlessly merges function-first profiles and geometry with a bold mix of rustic-meets-modern, gets us every time. Asit does with this very handy, 146mm / 5.7″ petty chef knife forged by hand from 52100 high-carbon steel. Nick delivers a tough, sharp, and dynamic edge that sits below convex, workhorse bevels; broad and strong in the rear at the 40mm tall heel, and slimming progressively forward towards a fine, needle-like tip perfect for slicing work. A handsomely shaped integral bolster gives way to the blade’s forge-finished flats that retain the marks of Nick’s hammer blows, while the primary bevels enjoy a silky, hand-sanded satin finish. Beyond the steel bolster with stepped, heirloom fit-up, is first a ring of red G10 for a pop of color as we’re accustomed to seeing from Nick, followed by a beautifully shaped and tinted piece of Maine river drive maple that likely dates to around the early 1800’s. Comfortable, weighted, and steady in the hand, this is one versatile knife for which any chef will find countless uses.
