Stand-out work by Austrian bladesmith Martin Huber that checks all the boxes: premium materials, visual beauty, and finely honed geometry, all in a package designedto do it all. Formulated and crafted from the ground up, Martin forges the damascus cladding from pure copper and 02 carbon steel, layering the finished product atop a core of 1.2419 high-carbon steel which forms the cutting edge. And that long, 240mm / 9.4″, razor-sharp edge is ready for action. Especially thin at, and just above, the cutting edge, the bevels are superbly shaped, convex with a medium height grind, perfect for not only all types of chopping tasks that take advantage of the tool’s overall size and heft, but for long, precise, and delicate slices as well. The rounded blade spine tapers significantly in the final inches as it leads to an aggressive, glass-thin tip, further adding to the edge’s versatility. With its nicely etched bevels that darken the steel and bring out the sheen of the copper, and forge-finished flats that show the rustic, hand-forged origins of its creation, the blade presents a touch of perfectly balanced lateral flexibility to boot. For comfort and control over the elegant blade in a style that complements the metallic portion of the tool wonderfully is a handle of dessert ironwood embellished with rings of black micarta and copper. The handle’s form, Martin’s shield-style wa rendition, is symmetrical in all directions and welcomed by all hand sizes and cutting styles.
