This first chef’s knife by our newest, and youngest bladesmith, Timo Verschuren of the Netherlands, bares the hallmarks of a culinary tool crafted by astalented, experienced, and thoughtful an artisan as we know. Designed and made by hand at his one-person studio, Timo creates a dynamic, high-performance object built for the demands of the hardworking kitchen, and styled with a simple elegance that sets it apart from the crowd. Forged from a house-made carbon damascus steel of his formulation, the blade features outstanding convex bevel geometry which slims downward to a thin, razor-sharp edge. From a wide, stiff, 4.1mm above the heel, the blade’s rounded spine enjoys a superb full-distal taper that slims to 2.1mm at the center to bare 0.7mm an inch from the tip, further adding to the knife’s capabilities around the kitchen; its tough, sturdy geometry toward the rear is perfect for chopping tasks and the densest foods, while the forward inches are especially slim from spine to edge, resulting also in a nicely balanced degree of lateral flexibility in the final third of the blade’s length. The entire knife’s center of mass lies less than half an inch in front of the edge’s heel. At the tip, the twisted damascus steel is glass thin, ideal for detail work and precision slicing. Complementing the comfort of the blade’s polished, rounded spine and heel, which the fingers hug in the pinch grip, is a handle as unique and handsome as it is a pleasure to hold. Sculpted from solid bronze, the hollow, one-piece construction is the icing on a cake that already tips the scales in favor of accolades and applause, shaped and finished with the utmost attention to detail.
