Made solely by Master Bladesmith David Lisch from his own feather pattern damascus at his Washington studio, this one-of-a-kind chef knife is a collaboration inthat it was created alongside artist and knifemaker Jayden Simisky whose floating blade design it features. Jayden, quite the talented maker in his own right, sees culinary knives as blank canvases for art, and this design came to him in a dream nearly three years ago. Awaiting the perfect opportunity for many months after he woke up that fateful night and sketched the design he had seen in his dreams, he reached out to Mr Lisch and the like-minded makers convened at David’s studio, each to craft their own knife based on Jayden’s concept. The result, as can be plainly seen, is extraordinary. David’s feather damascus, with 225mm of very thin, hard, and sharp edge and a full-distal taper to a fine tip, ‘floats,’ seemingly disjointed from the handle and bolster, secured instead to beautifully forged iron arms with a series of peened steel pins. These iron arms lie at the forefront of what becomes a unique, integral-like, full-tang handle, the iron passing backward first through the comfortable, sculpted bolster area, and then beyond, tapering heavily as it nears the rear of two opposing pieces of dark, striking pieces of camatillo, also known as Mexican Kingwood, fastened with three hand-hammered bronze pins. As always, the results of a collaboration are more than the sum of the parts, and David and Jayden set a new bar with this exquisite knife.
