Connecting Anchorage and Vienna in refreshing, double-dry-hopped mosaic style comes a collaboration gyuto for the books. Long-time admirer of bladesmith Benjamin Kamon’s work, brewer andfounder of Anchorage Brewing Gabe Fletcher set his sights on Benjamin for the the fifth offering in a series of knifemaker-inspired beers. As a talented knife and damascus artisan himself, Gabe knew an opportunity when he saw one, and instead of stopping with the beer itself, no matter how delicious it might be, more could be done to sweeten the partnership between the makers on either side of the world, and only a fully built, collaborative knife would do. While Mosaic, Nectaron, and Nelson Sauvin hops and malt percolated in Alaska, Gabe set out to forge a piece of mosaic damascus with Korneuburg, Austria as its destination. The raw bar of Gabe’s layered steel in hand, Benjamin went to work on a one-of-a-kind gyuto which would uphold not only his own extraordinary standards, but those of the award-winning craft brewery brewing a drink that would bear his namesake. The 260mm / 10.6″ blade is hand-forged by Benjamin from Gabe’s Deep Wave pattern mosaic damascus steel, delivering both the nuance and beauty expected of this Austrian maker. A thin, very hard edge sits below convex bevel geometry, with Benjamin’s brute-de-forge ‘Wave’ texturing gracing the blade’s flats, an area which he etched intentionally and deeply, along with the spine and choil, to produce a topographic-like tactile finish. The spine, rounded to the highest degree, tapers steadily from handle to tip, from 5.9mm to less than 1mm, producing a dynamic, versatile, and high-performance tool for the chef’s kitchen. Unprecedented in Benjamin’s work, a finger notch in the choil offers new possibilities, comfort, and control in the pinch grip. To grip this exquisite object, titanium and kingwood are sculpted into a form never before seen from Benjamin. Titanium is blackened with heirloom fit-up and thoughtful transitions at every step. Between end caps, the kingwood produces a dark, bold, and natural aesthetic full of grain and character that complements every other element. Put the pieces together and the first known chef’s knife + craft beer collaboration is born courtesy of these two inspiring artists.
