Engraver Philipp Mann’s goal is to inspire awe in those viewing his work in the same way that historicalpieceshave inspired him throughout his life andcareer. With this remarkable and unprecedented collaboration between Philipp and fellow Austrian metal-artist Benjamin Kamon, he has done just that. Informed by Philipp’s years of jewelry making, engraving, and the related detail-oriented handwork of his one-of-a-kind creations, he set out to make a knife handle unlike any other. Carved from a piece of moose antler with front and rear endcaps of engraved sterling silver, the minutiaofdetailed elements that form the knife’shandle, from theschnitter’s face, skeleton, and scythe, anhourglass imbued with 24k gold, and the textured, engraved, and sculpted silver, are nothing short of extraordinary at every turn. It was only after bladesmith Benjamin Kamon had formed an iconic Chinese-style vegetable cleaver blade that Philipp began on a project which wouldend up requiringover one hundred hours of scrupulous engraving to complete the handle. The blade, as expected of Benjamin’s blacksmithing, is incredible in its own right. Forged by hand from 1.2519 carbon steel, the 105mm-tall profile features a thin, razor-sharp edge below convex bevels that display beautiful alloy banding, the mono-steel almost appearing as one crafted from patterned damascus. Textured, balanced, and built to use, as Benjamin’s work always is, the blade will be at home on the cutting board or on display using its custom iron stand. A Kamon saya is included. Bravo, gentlemen, this work of functional art has certainly left us all in awe.
