Exquisitely crafted from the collaborative damascus steel created by this knife’s maker, Nick Anderson, along with bladesmiths Charlie Ellis and Joshua Prince, the NautilusCleaver is pure functional art. This trio of world-classmakersconverged on Nick’s studio in Oakland, California in Spring of 2022 to design and construct the extraordinary, mollusk-inspired damascus pattern used in thisintegral-construction vegetable cleaver. On parting, aftera solid weekof carefully formulating and crafting the patterned steel together, each artist took with them a piece from which they would craft a one-of-a-kind chef’s knife, and this blade is the result of Nick’s efforts that followed. Standing 69mm tall, the bevels slim from a faceted spine downward through the nautilus’ tentacles to a thin, sharp, wonderfully honed edge designed for all manner of vegetable chopping. Comfort and control are aided by an integral forged handle bolster that tapers from back to front where it then drops down three-quarters of the distance to the blade’s heel, offering a surface on which the forward fingers can rest. With heirloom fit and beautiful, polished finish, a ring of polished brass separates damascus steel from a sculpted piece of white paper micarta which completes the handle. A flush, polished steel retention bolt cap is visible at the rear. Weighted and balancing just at the front of the bolster, this rare and striking tool is as wonderful to hold as to admire.
