As though the copper has been clawed by talons and torn upward from the silky, convex bevels of this XL nakiri by Jerarmie ‘Jezz’ Heywood, the 262mm / 10.3″ blade is as unique and hard-working as they come. Forged to shape at his studio in the south of Australia, this steelmaker and bladesmith layers copper and reclaimed saw blade iron over a core of Aogami Super high-carbon damascus steel to form a long, straight profile with a thin, sharp edge destined for unstoppable utility in the chef’s kitchen. A forged finish extends the length of the upper portion of the blade below the rounded spine showing the marks of its hand-hammered origins, the hand-sanded satin bevels below slimming downward to a slim, hard edge that balances toughness and precision nicely. Powerful in the hand with a balance point around two inches in front of the blade’s heel and an overall weight of 12.7oz / 360g, this one-of-a-kind object is steady and substantial at the cutting board, poised to chop ingredients small and large with ease. Shaped from a homemade composite made from recycled plastics comes a tapered, shield-profile wa handle completed with a Tasmanian Oak collar and copper finial.
