Designed by Ikumi Ishizaki, the Menoke lacquerware soup bowl is crafted from kyaki zelhova, a hardwood home to Japan and East Asia, often used inthe art of bonsai. Exquisitely turned using traditional techniques that the craftspeople of this Yamanaka Prefecture have practiced for centuries, each bowl is formed from wood cut across its longitudinal grain using an approach known as tatekidori, allowing that grain to shine in beautiful fashion, and also to allow for extremely precise shaping by skilled artisans and an exacting finish of a functional object made to use daily for many years to come. At four inches high with a width of nearly five inches, this bowl is large enough for any meal and dish, sculpted in a style which has shaped Japanese food culture since ancient times.
